This Yukinko kokeshi by Takeda Masashi is a finely crafted example of contemporary creative kokeshi, combining warmth, humor, and refined woodworking. The figure is turned from wood and features a tall, gently tapering body with a natural finish that highlights the grain and hand-carved surface marks, giving the piece an organic, tactile character.
The doll’s head is partially recessed into the body, a defining characteristic of the Yukinko (“snow child”) style. When extended, the head reveals a delicately painted face with soft, minimal features and expressive black hair. When lowered, the head is capped with a charming red hood decorated with white polka dots, evoking a child bundled up against winter snow.
The lower portion of the body is stained in darker tones, creating a subtle contrast with the lighter upper section and adding visual depth. The overall form is slender and well-balanced, with a calm, introspective presence that is typical of Takeda Masashi’s work.
This piece beautifully captures the quiet poetry of traditional kokeshi while incorporating playful movement and interaction, making it both a collectible artwork and a delightful object of contemplation.
Height: 21,5cm
