Rare Vintage Creative Kokeshi By Kahei Katase (1922-2015)

This is a handcrafted sosaku kokeshi doll by Katase Kahei, featuring a minimalist, rounded head with delicate facial features and stylized hair. The tall cylindrical body is painted in vivid red tones with floral motifs, reflecting the artist’s signature use of lacquered colors and nature-inspired decoration. Katase’s work is known for combining traditional craftsmanship with creative, modern design.

Born in the town of Hakone, Katase-san won the first Prime Minister’s Award in 1954 at the ‘All Nippon Kokeshi Competition’. Along with many of his fellow Sosaku artists, Katase-san was a soldier, and perhaps turned to creative Kokeshi-making to assuage the rigors of a long war.
