Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi made by Sato Suigai (1920-)

This lovely wooden kokeshi doll crafted by Sato Suigai. It features a simple, elegant form with a rounded head and elongated body, painted in soft natural tones. The doll has delicately closed eyes, a subtle expression, and minimal floral detailing, complemented by a black scarf-like motif with white patterns—reflecting a calm and refined aesthetic typical of modern creative kokeshi.

Sato Suigai was born in Gunma, Prefecture of Japan in 1920. Started under the wings of his teacher Suiun Komuro at the age of 18. He had received numerous awards including the prestigious Prime minister award. He even had opened his individual exhibition in Odawara city in 1976.
