Big massive vintage Daruma kokeshi by Shogo Shinkai

This piece is a wonderfully round, substantial Okiagari-Daruma style wooden folk doll. It features a classic Japanese idiom painted on its side and bears the signature of another highly regarded lineage of Tohoku craftspeople.
Here is the breakdown of this third piece:
1. The Proverb: "七転八起" (Nanamarobi Yaoki)
On the red side of the doll (second image), you can see vertical black calligraphy that perfectly sums up the core philosophy of the Daruma:

七転八起

This is one of Japan's most famous four-character idioms (yojijukugo). It translates literally to "Fall seven times, stand up eight." It is a powerful message of ultimate resilience, encouraging you to keep persevering and rising again no matter how many times life knocks you down.
2. The Artisan: Shogo Shinkai (新海省吾)
Looking at the bottom of the piece (third image), the handwritten signature reads:

省吾 作 (Shogo saku) – "Made by Shogo"
(You can also spot a faint red square artist stamp or "hanko" right underneath the signature)

Shogo Shinkai is an established craftsman from Yamagata Prefecture. He is known for creating beautiful traditional wooden crafts, particularly specializing in highly expressive, beautifully turned Okiagari (tumbler) figures and rounded folk crafts that focus heavily on capturing the classic, intense facial features of the Zen master Bodhidharma.
3. Visual & Sculptural Characteristics
The Spherical Shape: Unlike the previous cylindrical and flat-topped pieces, this one is turned into a heavy, beautifully rounded sphere. This mimics the shape of traditional papier-mâché tumbling Darumas.
The Facial Features: Shogo Shinkai's brushwork here is wonderfully expressive. The face features incredibly thick, determined eyebrows, an asymmetrical glare that oozes character, and a very prominent, stylized beard covering the jaw.
