Rare vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Hideo Ishihara (1925-1999)

This vintage Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll by master artisan Hideo Ishihara (1925–1999) is titled "Aka Warabe" (which translates to "Red Kid" or "Red Child").

The piece features a striking, minimalist aesthetic characterized by an all-over vibrant red finish that coats both the round head and the sleek, elongated body. True to Ishihara’s signature style, the facial features are rendered with bold, expressive sumi-e ink lines, depicting classic black hair framing a subtle, delicate face. In Japanese culture, the bold red color traditionally symbolizes protection against illness and evil spirits, while also representing health, prosperity, and vitality for children.
