Vintage Creative Kokeshi By Shido Shozan (1932-1995)
She is titled "Tenpyo", she is wearing a traditional dress from the Tenpyo era in the 8th century. This period was realy important for Japan, because it sees the emergence of an autonomous Japanese culture, detached from the Chinese kingdoms.
Shozan Shido was born in 1932 in Oita Prefecture, where he began creating Kokeshi in the 50s. In the begin off is career he was a traditional kokeshi artisan and made Yamagata kokeshi. It was only after moving from Tokyo to Yonezawa that Shozan started making creative kokeshi. His creative works were recognized with numerous awards over the years such as the Prime Minister's Award.
