This beautiful Creative (Gumma) kokeshi doll is a captivating creation by the award-winning master artisan Kazuo Takamizawa (born 1927). The doll features a wonderfully rounded, plump silhouette with a highly distinct, smooth black bobbed hairstyle, beautifully crowned by an intricate, patterned topknot. Her serene, closed-eye expression is complemented by a subtle pop of red on the lips. The body of the doll beautifully showcases Takamizawa's mastery of woodcarving and wood-burning techniques (pyrography), where the rich, natural grain of the wood is elegantly embellished with deeply etched camellia (tsubaki) flowers and a touch of red at the collar. Balancing mid-century Japanese modernism with the timeless warmth of traditional folk art, this sophisticated piece makes for a truly exceptional collector's item.
