Gumma kokeshi made by Fujikawa Masae (1942-)
Kokeshi doll created in the Creative (Sosaku) style. She is titled " Hana Tsumi " which means " Gather flowers ".
She wears a wonderful blue Kimono with plum blossoms. In Japanese tradition, the plum blossom is a much loved symbol: it represents strength, rebirth and hope. She also has a pretty kanzashi (Japanese hair clips) with red plum blossoms carved on the hair.
It is a work of the award-winning artist Fujikawa Masae (Syoei) . Born in 1942 in Numata, in the prefecture of Gunma, he studied with the teacher Ishida Kanji (the first president of the Gunma Kokeshi cooperative from 1959 to 1962). Among the many awards won in his career he has won The "Prime Minister of Japan" twice in 1996 and 2002.
