This elegant sōsaku kokeshi by Megumi Nozawa, titled “Cold Spring,” beautifully conveys a sense of quiet stillness, purity, and seasonal serenity. Through its refined simplicity and delicate floral design, the piece captures the subtle atmosphere of early spring — a moment when winter’s chill still lingers in the air while the first signs of renewal begin to emerge.

The kokeshi features Nozawa’s signature gentle expression: softly closed eyes, rosy cheeks, and a faint smile that radiates calmness and inner peace. The doll’s rounded form and minimalist facial features create a meditative presence, inviting contemplation and tranquility.

Its kimono is adorned with an intricate pattern of pale blossoms set against a deep indigo-blue background. The cool color palette evokes crisp spring mornings and clear seasonal skies, while the white flowers symbolize purity, hope, and the quiet awakening of nature. The subtle turquoise accents add refinement and movement to the composition, enhancing the harmonious balance between softness and elegance.

The contrast between the smooth black hair and the detailed floral motifs further emphasizes the sophistication of Nozawa’s craftsmanship. As with many of her works, the piece blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with the individuality and emotional depth characteristic of contemporary sōsaku kokeshi.

“Cold Spring” is both understated and deeply expressive — a poetic celebration of seasonal transition, gentle beauty, and emotional calm. Through delicate carving, painting, and texture work, Megumi Nozawa transforms a simple wooden form into an artwork filled with grace, warmth, and quiet reflection.
