This is a beautiful vintage set of two creative (sosaku) kokeshi dolls crafted by the prominent mid-century artisan Shozan Shido (1932-1995), visible in image.png. True to his signature style, these dolls highlight a masterfully minimalist and elegant aesthetic.
the pair features elongated, slender bodies that gracefully taper down, revealing a darker, contrasting wood base underneath a stylized outer layer that resembles a kimono hemline. They are characterized by their iconic carved, helmet-like hair (bob-cut style) with a natural grain texture, framing finely detailed, serene facial features with narrowed eyes and a tiny touch of red paint for the mouth. Shido’s brilliant use of the natural wood grain as the main design element gives this set a timeless, modern appeal that perfectly bridges traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary design.
Master Shido Shozanwas born in 1932 and raised in Oita prefecture. He won many prizes in his career, as well as the most important Prime Minister Award.
