Rare Vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka (1931-)

This creative kokeshi doll crafted by Aoki Ryoka features a sleek, elegant design with a deep reddish-brown or dark mahogany body, beautifully contrasted by natural wood tones at the base and neck. The doll wears a smooth, sculpted dark hair piece complete with a subtle top topknot and delicate, gold or warm orange floral motifs accenting her hair and kimono. Her serene face displays softly arched eyes and a subtle smile, while the visible inner kimono collar adds a touch of traditional detail beneath her graceful outer garment.

Aoki Ryoka is an award-winning artisan, she began creating kokeshi dolls in 1985. Over the years she has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Minister of Education Award (2001), the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award, and the renowned Gunma Modern Kokeshi Competition. She has even been awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize twice.
