This vintage Sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll by artisan Seiju Kon (b. 1931) is titled "Oshinobi Dōchū" (忍び道中), which translates to "Traveling Incognito".
The figure depicts a noble lady or traveler wrapped in a protective, dark-rimmed cloak, concealing her form as she journeys in disguise. Her sloped, narrow head reveals delicate, hand-painted facial features, while a prominent round straw traveling hat (sugegasa) attached to the front accentuates the sense of protection and privacy. Handcrafted using natural wood tones and subtle pigments, the piece elegantly captures the quiet atmosphere of ancient Japanese travel.
Height: 14cm
Weight: 90g
