Rare vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Kato Masami (1925-)

This is an elegant kokeshi doll by Kato Masami, carved from solid wood and finished with a refined, natural polish. The doll has a tall, slender cylindrical body and a serene face with closed eyes and a small red mouth, conveying a sense of calm and introspection.

The distinctive carved hairstyle frames the face like a smooth wooden hood, showcasing the artist’s mastery of form and balance. The body is richly decorated with hand-painted floral motifs in deep autumnal tones—reds, greens, browns, and blacks—that blend organically with the visible wood grain. This combination of sculptural simplicity and expressive painting is characteristic of Kato Masami’s work, resulting in a timeless piece that harmoniously blends traditional kokeshi aesthetics with a modern, artistic sensibility.

Born in Naruko in the perfecture Myagi in 1925. Her husband, who was a traditional kokeshi master, taught her how to make kokeshi. She has won several awards, including the most prestigious off them all the Prime Minister Award.
