Key Artistic Features

• The Crimson Lily (Hime-Yuri) Motif: Unlike the larger, climbing lily seen on other dolls, the main feature here is a single, strikingly detailed, downward-facing lily. It has vibrant crimson and reddish-orange petals with fine black detailing on the stamen, giving it a much more dramatic feel. The plant is rendered with subtle bokashi (shading) on the leaves and stem, a master's touch reminiscent of kimono painting.

• Serene Expression: The face is a classic example of Hashime's style—serene, with narrow, gentle eyes and a tiny, understated red mouth, conveying a sense of quietude.

• Refined Form: It features the signature cylindrical body and smoothly rounded head. The light-colored wood has a perfect finish, acting as a clean canvas for the detailed botanical artwork.

Takahashi Hashime began his career as a fine artist and painter, known for his colorful designs and distinctive brushwork. He was born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture—the birthplace of traditional Kokeshi. His artistic background also includes work as a Yuzen silk–kimono dyeing craftsman, which explains why kimono motifs feature so prominently in all of his dolls.

He received multiple awards in annual Kokeshi competitions, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, the highest honor given to Sosaku Kokeshi artists. His work is instantly recognizable for its unique forms and meticulous details.
