Tsujita Ryozo was born in 1923 in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. After the Second World War, he was taken prisoner and held in a Siberian labor camp until his release in the 1950s. In 1959, he began making kokeshi dolls in his own studio. He won the National Creative Kokeshi Art Exhibition and the Prime Minister’s Prize twice, in 1956 and again in 1981.
