This kokeshi doll by the renowned artist Hajime Miyashita is a beautiful example of modern Japanese woodwork, characterized by its elegant, rounded form and serene expression. The doll features a striking black bob hairstyle with a traditional bun on top, framing a minimalist face with delicately painted downcast eyes that evoke a sense of quiet contemplation. She is dressed in a vibrant red kimono, decorated with a bold black triangular chest piece adorned with golden hexagonal "Bishamon-kikko" patterns and soft floral accents. The smooth, polished finish of the wood and the balanced proportions are hallmarks of Miyashita’s award-winning style, blending traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary, artistic aesthetic.
Born in Yonezawa City, Iwate, Miyashita-san studied traditional kokeshi making artist Kobayashi Kichitaro. He began his Sosaku career in 1959, winning many awards, including the the most important off them all the Prime Minister’s Award in 1977. Even Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako purchased his masterpieces in 1969. His studio was located in Maebashi City of Gunma Prefecture, but his studio took fire in 2006 , Miyashita-san retired after this disaster.
