This elegant kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka showcases a refined and contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Hand-carved from wood, the figure features a softly rounded form and a serene expression with gently closed eyes and a subtle smile.
She wears a warm blue kimono with delicate speckled snow detailing and a darker base, accented by a circular crest motif on the front. The smooth, dark bob hairstyle frames her face beautifully, adding a modern yet timeless character to the piece. The overall design conveys quiet grace, simplicity, and harmony.
The title of this work is "Kamon," which means "family crest" in Japanese. "Kamon" are heraldic emblems passed down through generations by the Japanese aristocracy.
Aoki Ryoka is an award-winning artisan, she began creating kokeshi dolls in 1985. Over the years she has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Minister of Education Award (2001), the Minister of International Trade and Industry Award, and the renowned Gunma Modern Kokeshi Competition. She has even been awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize twice.
