Vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai (1920-)

“Poetry” by Sato Suigai is a refined and contemplative creative kokeshi that embodies poetic restraint and natural harmony. Carved from wood, the doll features Suigai’s characteristic minimalist facial expression: gently closed, elongated eyes and a tiny red accent at the mouth, conveying serenity and introspection.

The figure is crowned with a softly rounded, helmet-like hairstyle in deep burgundy tones, framing the face with smooth, sculptural precision. The body is cylindrical and elegantly proportioned, finished in rich reddish-brown lacquer. Delicately incised and inlaid botanical motifs—grasses and seed heads rendered in lighter natural wood—flow across the surface, evoking autumn fields and quiet seasonal beauty.

A subtle glimpse of the kimono collar at the neckline adds warmth and intimacy, while the visible wood grain and hand-finished details emphasize the artisan’s touch. The overall aesthetic is calm, lyrical, and balanced, true to the title Poesia, which suggests a visual poem expressed through form, texture, and understatement.

This kokeshi is a fine example of modern Japanese folk art, combining traditional craftsmanship with an expressive, almost meditative elegance.

Sato Suigai was born in Gunma, Prefecture of Japan in 1920. Started under the wings of his teacher Suiun Komuro at the age of 18. He had received numerous awards including the prestigious Prime minister award. He even had opened his individual exhibition in Odawara city in 1976.
