Vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Yamagishi Umeyoshi

Crafted by the renowned artist Yamagishi Umeyoshi, this creative (Sosaku) kokeshi doll showcases a charmingly playful and whimsical design, featuring a rounded head topped with a small wooden peg. The doll's natural wood surface is decorated with a delightful array of hand-painted motifs wrapped around its body and head, including a stylized rooster, a spider, a fish, a star, a flower, a butterfly, and a traditional Japanese face drawing (hennohenomoheji). With its minimalist facial features and expressive folk-art illustrations, this unique piece highlights Umeyoshi's distinctive approach to modern wooden craft, blending traditional craftsmanship with naive, imaginative storytelling.
