Exclusive Sosaku kokeshi by Aoki Ryoka (1931-)

This creative (Sosaku) kokeshi doll by renowned artist Aoki Ryoka (青木蓼華) features a smooth, egg-shaped body carved from rich, warm-toned wood. Titled Kanbai (寒梅, "Winter Plum Blossoms"), the doll is hand-carved with fine, stylized long hair framing a serene, gently smiling face. The body is decorated with delicate white plum blossoms in full bloom along dark branches, contrasted by an intricately textured, darkened pattern along the lower skirt area reminiscent of traditional Japanese pine-bark or scale motifs (matsu-kawa-bishi / seigaiha). The base bears handwritten calligraphic inscriptions including the title (Kanbai), the date Showa 63 (昭和六十三年, 1988), and the artist’s signature (Ryoka) alongside her red artist stamp (hanko).
