Exclusive Sosaku kokeshi by Shido Shozan (1932-1995)

This is a beautiful and authentic vintage sosaku (creative) kokeshi doll by the acclaimed master artisan Shido Shozan (1932–1995). Known for his elegant and serene designs, this piece perfectly encapsulates Shozan's signature style.

The doll is crafted from a warm-toned, richly grained wood and features an attractive, slightly ovoid or "egg-shaped" form that is highly characteristic of Shozan’s sculptural work. The most distinguishing feature is the meticulously carved hairstyle. The wood has been precisely grooved vertically to create fine, cascading lines that simulate silky, traditional hair. This "grooved hair" technique is a classic trademark of Shido Shozan’s work, providing a beautiful tactile contrast to the smooth, rounded body.

Tucked under the heavy curve of the hair is a serene and peaceful face, rendered with just a few delicate, minimalist brushstrokes to suggest closed eyes and a small mouth. The doll features a carved collar with a subtle checkered pattern, adding a traditional folk motif. Around the waist, a dark obi (sash) is intricately decorated with geometric patterns using woodburning or painting techniques, creating a lovely contrast with the natural wood.
