This vintage creative Japanese kokeshi doll, crafted by master artisan Shozan Shido (1932–1995), showcases his signature elegant, stylized aesthetic. The figure features a slender, elongated silhouette carved from beautifully grained dark wood, highlighted by a defined waist accentuating a patterned obi sash with subtle carved geometric leaf motifs. The doll's head boasts a serene, minimalist facial expression with closed eyes and delicate red lips, topped with an ornate black traditional bun hairstyles (chignon) adorned with a detailed hairpin ornament. Standing gracefully with timeless Mid-Century Modern Japanese craftsmanship, this collectible piece beautifully blends traditional lathe-turning techniques with artistic sophistication.
Shozan Shido was born in 1932 in Oita Prefecture, where he began creating Kokeshi in the 50s. In the begin off is career he was a traditional kokeshi artisan and made Yamagata kokeshi. It was only after moving from Tokyo to Yonezawa that Shozan started making creative kokeshi. His creative works were recognized with numerous awards over the years such as the Prime Minister's Award.
