This rare and unusual Kokeshi doll is crafted from dogwood and features a striking plaid pattern inspired by a Yukata. The design includes a distinctive wide belt or sash carved directly from the wood and decorated with a vertical stripe motif. The doll’s face is delicately expressed with small, sleepy eyes and a simple dot nose. Its bob-style haircut with bangs reflects the variety of personal styles that were popular during the period.
The word Yukata derives from yu (bath) and katabira (an undergarment traditionally made of cotton, linen, or hemp). Yukata are worn after bathing in communal baths, serving both to cover the body quickly and absorb remaining moisture. This custom dates back more than 1,000 years, when people wore these garments to and from the bath.
