Unlike traditional kokeshi, which follow strict regional patterns, Hashime’s work is celebrated for its painterly and artistic approach—a result of his background as a fine arts painter and silk kimono dyer.

Key Features of this Doll

• Artistic Style: The doll features the signature "painterly" touch of Takahashi Hashime. Notice the delicate, thin brushstrokes used for the facial features (eyes and mouth), which give the doll a serene, pensive expression.

• Ornamentation: The body is decorated with an elegant obi (belt) and minimalist floral or leaf motifs. Hashime often incorporated elements of nature, such as plum blossoms or bamboo, using refined techniques he mastered during his time in the textile industry.

Takahashi Hashime began his career as a fine artist and painter, known for his colorful designs and distinctive brushwork. He was born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture—the birthplace of traditional Kokeshi. His artistic background also includes work as a Yuzen silk–kimono dyeing craftsman, which explains why kimono motifs feature so prominently in all of his dolls.

He received multiple awards in annual Kokeshi competitions, including the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award, the highest honor given to Sosaku Kokeshi artists. His work is instantly recognizable for its unique forms and meticulous details.
