This exquisite pair of modern (Sosaku) Japanese Kokeshi dolls by artisan Sanpei Yamanaka showcases his signature minimalist aesthetic and fine wood-lathe craftsmanship. Both dolls feature slender, gently tapered bodies carved with fine horizontal wood-grain rings—the taller doll in warm earthy brown tones accented with delicate floral motifs near the base, and the smaller doll in cool teal-green tones featuring a dainty dragonfly emblem. Their rounded heads highlight the natural beauty of the wood grain, completed with simple, serene facial features and subtle pops of red, making them a beautifully balanced and charming pair.
Yamanaka was born in 1926 in Yamagata and made creative kokeshi his whole career. His kokeshi are loved by collectors all over the world. He won the 'Prime Minister Award' in 1979.
