Rare vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Sato Suigai (1920-)

This elegant kokeshi doll by Sato Suigai is a refined example of contemporary creative kokeshi craftsmanship. The figure is characterized by its elongated, gently rounded head and slender body, finished in a warm, lacquer-like ochre tone that highlights the natural wood grain.

The face is minimalist and serene, with softly closed eyes, fine black hair detailing, and a small red accent for the mouth, conveying a quiet sense of introspection and calm. The body is richly decorated with delicately hand-painted autumnal motifs, including blue bellflowers (kikyō), grasses, and foliage, rendered in harmonious shades of purple, green, brown, and deep red. Sato Suigai was born in Gunma, Prefecture of Japan in 1920. Started under the wings of his teacher Suiun Komuro at the age of 18. He had received numerous awards including the prestigious Prime minister award. He even had opened his individual exhibition in Odawara city in 1976.
