This exquisite sōsaku kokeshi by Megumi Nozawa, titled “Nasturtium Love,” beautifully captures the quiet elegance and poetic sensitivity for which the artist is renowned. The title refers to the nasturtium flower — known for its vibrant colors and symbolism of warmth, affection, vitality, and joyful energy — themes that are deeply reflected throughout the piece.

The doll features a serene, upward-looking expression with softly blushed cheeks and delicately carved facial details, evoking a sense of peace, contemplation, and gentle optimism. Her calm posture and subtle smile create an almost meditative presence, inviting the viewer into a moment of quiet reflection.

One of the most striking elements of the piece is the richly decorated kimono, covered in vivid floral motifs in shades of crimson, coral, gold, pink, and deep turquoise. These intricate hand-painted flowers create a tapestry-like effect, showcasing Nozawa’s exceptional attention to detail and refined artistic balance. The floral design strongly echoes the symbolism behind the title Nasturtium Love, expressing blooming affection, emotional warmth, and the beauty of nature.

The contrast between the colorful kimono and the smooth black hair enhances the harmony and sophistication of the composition. The rounded form and minimalist facial expression are characteristic of contemporary sōsaku kokeshi, where individuality and artistic interpretation take precedence over strict traditional forms.

Through delicate carving, painting, and texture work, Megumi Nozawa succeeds in giving the doll both emotional depth and graceful femininity. This kokeshi is not only a collectible artwork, but also a poetic expression of love, serenity, and the quiet joy found in everyday beauty — perfectly embodying the spirit of modern Japanese kokeshi craftsmanship.
