Rare vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Aida Seiho (Harumine) (1926-1998)

this is a beautiful vintage creative (sosaku) Kokeshi doll crafted by the prominent artisan Aida Harumine. The doll features a wonderful organic aesthetic, carved from a single piece of wood that beautifully showcases its natural grain and rich brown tones. It is designed with a distinctive, angular carved hairstyle framing a serene, hand-painted face with closed eyes and a small red mouth. The bell-shaped body is highly detailed, featuring a uniquely textured, scalloped pattern on one side alongside hand-painted red camellia (tsubaki) flowers and green leaves, capturing Harumine’s signature mastery of combining delicate painting with deep, tactile woodcarving.

Born in Yonezawa, Yamagata prefecture in 1926 and died in 1998, he was one of the founders of creative kokeshi in the 60s. During his career he has received numerous awards.
