Vintage Gumma kokeshi by Fujikawa Masae (1942-2015)

This Sosaku (creative) Japanese kokeshi doll, crafted by the renowned award-winning artisan Masae Fujikawa (1942–2015), is a captivating piece of wooden folk art. The doll features a rounded body with a smooth, glossy black bob haircut framing a serene, peaceful expression with gently closed eyes and a subtle blush.

The body forms a rounded kimono painted with a rich, atmospheric gradient that transitions from a soft amber and deep orange at the top to a dark, near-black tone at the base. Its surface is delicately decorated with hand-painted autumn nature motifs, including graceful stalks of pampas grass (susuki) catching the light and small clusters of clover or bush clover flowers (hagi) in subtle tones of orange, green, and cream. The carved details of the folded collar and a tied bow on the front add depth and texture to the wood grain, exemplifying Fujikawa's refined craftsmanship and serene aesthetic.
