This beautiful creative (Sosaku) kokeshi doll titled "Usubi" what means "Soft light" is a distinctive creation by the renowned artist Masami Kato. The doll features an elegant, multi-tiered design carved from natural wood, consisting of a rounded head, an elongated torso, and a unique spherical base. It is decorated with muted, earthy olive-green and brown tones that accentuate the wood's natural grain. The head is adorned with a painted hood or hairstyle featuring delicate floral and pine needle motifs, framing a serene face with minimalist, slit-like eyes and a calm expression. The main body represents a kimono detailed with subtle, textured nature patterns, which elegantly opens at the bottom to reveal a vibrant peek of a purple undergarment decorated with blue floral accents. It is a stunning, harmonious blend of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and creative mid-century modern design.
She was born in Naruko in Miyagi Prefecture in 1925. Her husband, who was a traditional kokeshi master, taught her the art of making kokeshi. He has won numerous awards, including the most prestigious Prime Minister's Award.
