Vintage Sosaku kokeshi by Maruyama Hougetsu

This vintage, creative sosaku Kokeshi doll is a work by the esteemed artisan Maruyama Hougetsu. Characterized by its charmingly simplified form and delicate hand-painted details, it features a rounded body of natural, light wood adorned with scattered, soft pink and vibrant red camellia (tsubaki) flowers and white petals. The doll's serene, innocent face is capped by a distinctively sculpted wooden bun hairstyles (chignon) and a topknot. It is accompanied by its original decorative paper-lined wooden box (kiribako), which bears the artisan's signature "Hougetsu" (抱月), the seal "Maruyama" (丸山), and the inscription "Modern Japanese Kokeshi Craftsman Association Member" (日本近代こけし作家協会会員). This pair beautifully blends traditional lathe-turning with modern artistic expression.
