Vintage Tsugaru kokeshi with Daruma face on the body.

Daruma is the Japanese pronunciation of Dharma , short for Bodhidharma , the twenty-eighth patriarch of Zen Buddhism. In the Japanese tradition it is considered an auspicious symbol of constancy and strong determination, in fact it represents optimism, good luck and willpower in pursuing one's goals without distractions. The Daruma also protects against all evil with its inquiring gaze.
